As ever, the day and the events surrounding it are very poignant, not only in terms of commemorating the lives lost in the Holocaust, but also acting as a reminder that we should learn the lessons of history.
The theme for this year's Holocaust Memorial Day was 'Speak Up, Speak Out' - a message that celebrates those who spoke out against perpetrators of violence and hatred during the Holocaust (and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda) and used their voices to protect those at risk of persecution.
But speaking up is also so relevant now. Unless we challenge the language of hatred and tackle racism head on then we have failed at learning the messages of the past.
